In a large measuring cup, combine warm water, sugar and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Add in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Combine until a dough forms, knead dough on a floured surface until smooth. Place dough into a large greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise for 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
Preheat oven to 400 F. Deflate dough and divide in half, and roll out each half on a floured surface into a large rectangle. Using a pizza cutter, cut into slices. Place breadsticks onto a large greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30-60 minutes.
Bake for 13-15 minutes. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with salt and garlic powder. When breadsticks come out of the oven, brush with melted butter mixture. Sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese.
