In a large measuring cup, combine warm milk with sugar and yeast, let sit for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Pour in yeast mixture, melted butter and egg. Mix until a dough forms. Knead dough on a floured surface until smooth. Place dough into a large greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Deflate dough and roll it out into a long rectangle. In a small bowl, combine softened butter with minced garlic. Evenly spread the garlic butter over the dough. Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
Roll dough out into a tight log and slice into 12 even slices. Place into a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
