Homemade Pretzel Rolls

Homemade pretzel rolls are a great flavorful bread roll that goes great with any meal. These rolls taste just like a pretzel. They are made with classic yeast dough, then boiled in a mixture of boiling water and baking soda. They are so fluffy with a golden browned outside and topped with salt. Serve with any meal for delicious bread. You can also make these rolls larger for a sandwich roll instead.

The dough for these rolls is made with a classic yeast dough. After the dough has risen, it is divided into 12 rolls and rolled into round balls. Place each roll, two at a time in a mixture of boiling water and baking soda. This baking soda bath will give the rolls the traditional pretzel flavor. Place the rolls onto a baking sheet, sprinkle with salt and bake until golden browned.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 10 cups water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda

Instructions
 

  • In a large measuring cup, combine warm water and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and, brown sugar.
  • Add in yeast mixture and melted butter, mix until a dough forms. Knead dough on a floured surface until smooth. Place dough into a large greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise for 1-2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 400 F. Bring water and baking soda to a boil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Deflate dough and divide into rolls, roll each into a ball. Drop each roll into the boiling water and boil for 20 seconds. Place rolls onto a greased baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
