Cheesy buttermilk biscuits are flaky and cheesy, the perfect savory biscuit for breakfast or as a dinner side dish. Instead of your usual fluffy buttermilk biscuits, these biscuits are light and flaky with shredded cheddar cheese cut into the dough. There are many ways that you can serve these biscuits, from serving warm with soup or a bowl of chili. Or you can also serve them for a breakfast or brunch with some bacon and eggs.

I made a homemade buttermilk substitute for these biscuits to give them the traditional buttermilk flavor. To make the buttermilk substitute, whisk milk and white distilled vinegar together in a measuring cup. Although you can also use one cup of store bought buttermilk as well. In a large bowl, whisk the flour with the seasonings. Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut in the shredded cheddar cheese and the cold cubed butter into the flour mixture until it is crumbly and resembles course crumbs. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour butter mixture and mix until a soggy dough forms. Gently fold the dough over itself a couple of times on a floured surface until all of the dough is gathered together. Cut out biscuits and place onto a large greased baking sheet. Bake until they are lightly browned.
