In a large measuring cup, combine water with sugar and active dry yeast. let sit for 10 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add in 1/4 cup melted butter and yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms. Knead dough on a floured surface until smooth.
Place dough in a large greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or towel and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until the dough has doubled in size.
Preheat oven to 400 F. Deflate dough and divide into smaller pieces. Roll each into a long breadstick. Place breadsticks onto a large greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30-60 minutes.
Bake for 15-20 minutes. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with salt and garlic powder. Brush warm breadsticks with garlic butter.
