In a large measuring cup, whisk together water, sugar and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Pour in yeast mixture, warm milk and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms. Knead dough on a floured surface and knead until smooth. Place dough into a large greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Deflate dough and divide into 16 equal sized pieces. Flatten each piece and set aside. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and sprinkle with cornmeal.
Place english muffins on the hot skillet and let cook until lightly browned, flip and cook the other side until lightly browned. Place muffins onto a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes.
