Red Velvet Cut Out Cookies

Delicious red velvet sugar cookies cut out into the shape of hearts making these cookies perfect for Valentine’s day. These cookies have all of the traditional flavors of red velvet by using cocoa powder in the cookie dough. And they are dyed red with red food coloring to give the the red velvet look. The cookies are sweet and delicious and a fun way to enjoy the holiday. You can also make these cookies for Christmas instead by using your favorite Christmas themed cookie cutters instead of a heart.

The cookie dough is made with cocoa powder into the dough to give them the traditional red velvet taste. Butter is mixed with sugar, an egg and vanilla extract until smooth. The flour and cocoa powder mixture is slowly added to the butter mixture and beat until it is all combined. Refrigerate the dough for at least one hour before baking. Once the dough has chilled, divide the dough in half and roll out on a floured surface. Cut out cookies using a heart shaped cookie cutter and place onto a large baking sheet. Bake until the cookies are fully cooked through.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking soda. In a large bowl, using a mixer, beat softened butter with granulated sugar until fluffy.
  • Add in egg and vanilla extract, beat until smooth. Add the dry ingredients into the mixture in three additions, beating well after each until all of the flour is incorporated. Cover and refrigerate dough for at least one hour.
  • Preheat oven to 350 F. Divide dough into smaller balls and roll out each onto a floured surface. Roll out into a rectangle and cut out cookies using a heart shaped cookie cutter. Place cookies onto a large ungreased baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes.
