Patty melts are a cross between a hamburger and a grilled cheese. They are usually served at diners with a side of french fries. Long thin hamburgers on rye bread with melted swiss cheese and topped with caramelized onions. These sandwiches are cooked like a grilled cheese, but with a juicy hamburger in the middle. These delicious sandwiches taste great served with the type of foods that you would find at a diner, such as home fries or onion rings.
Patty melts are traditionally made with rye bread, although if you would rather you can substitute rye bread for sourdough bread or any other type of bread that you want. You can also change the cheese to your favorite type of cheese as well. Swiss or american cheese is what is traditionally used for patty melts. Sliced yellow onion is cooked in a large skillet with melted butter. Cook the onions slow over medium-low heat, to caramelize them. It takes about 15-20 minutes until the onions are caramelized.
Instead of shaping the ground beef into the traditional shape, they are shaped into long thin patties to fit the size of the bread. Cook the burger patties in butter in a large skillet until both sides are browned. To prepare the sandwiches, one slice of swiss cheese is placed on one side of all of the slices of bread. Place the burger patties on 4 of the slices of bread and top them with the caramelized onion mixture. Place the remaining bread on top, sandwiching together cheese side down. Melt more butter in the skillet and cook the sandwiches until browned on both sides and the cheese is melted.
