Homemade Hush Puppies

Crispy and fluffy homemade hush puppies make a great appetizer for any meal. Hush puppies are a classic southern dish made by frying cornmeal and flour batter until it is golden browned. There are many ways that you can serve these hush puppies. You can serve them with tartar sauce or you can eat them by themselves. They are the perfect appetizer to go with any southern meal.
To make the batter for the hush puppies, equal parts of flour and cornmeal are whisked together with salt and baking powder. Egg and milk are added until a smooth thick batter forms. Using a cookie scoop, drop tablespoon sized balls of batter into the hot oil. Fry until golden browned on all sides. Drain grease and serve.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder and salt. Add in egg and milk, whisk until smooth.
  • Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Drop tablespoons of batter into the oil and fry in batches until golden browned on all sides.
