Crispy Fried Onion Garlic Parmesan Mac and Cheese

Creamy and cheesy baked mac and cheese topped with mozzarella cheese and crispy french fried onions. This easy and cheesy mac and cheese bake makes the perfect side dish for any meal, or as a holiday side dish for Christmas or Thanksgiving. Everyone will love the creamy and cheesy pasta with a crispy topping.

To make the creamy cheese sauce, butter is melted in a large saucepan, then garlic is cooked in the butter for a minute. Add in the flour, and cook until it is browned. Pour in the milk, 1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese, and the seasonings. Cook the sauce until the cheese has fully melted, and mix the sauce with cooked pasta. Spread the mixture into a greased casserole dish. Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese and fried onions. Bake until the cheese has fully melted and the onions are crispy.

Crispy Fried Onion Garlic Parmesan Mac and Cheese

Ingredients
  

  • 16 oz. elbow pasta
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 can french fried onions

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 350 F. Cook the pasta according to package directions, drain. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook the garlic in the butter until fragrant.
  • Add in flour, mix for a minute until browned. Pour in milk, 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper. Continue to cookie while whisking, until the cheese has completely melted and the sauce has thickened.
  • Mix the sauce with the pasta. Spread it into a greased baking dish. Top with the remaining 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese. Top with french fried onions. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
