You can make it for Halloween and fill it with candy corn, or it is great for any occasion filled with your favorite candy. You can also prepare the cake layers ahead of time and keep them in the freezer for up to three months. Then when you are ready to decorate your cake, just let the cake layers come to room temperature and they will taste like a fresh baked cake.

The cake layers are made with a classic vanilla cake batter. You can also use a boxed cake mix for the cake layers if you would rather. To make the cake Halloween themed, I dyed the cake layers orange and purple. To make for any occasion you leave the food coloring out. Bake the cake layers and let them cool completely, after they have cooled you can also freeze the cake layers to use at another time.

To make the vanilla buttercream frosting, beat softened butter with powdered sugar, vanilla extract and milk until the frosting is light and fluffy. I also used food coloring in the frosting to make it orange for Halloween. Cut out circles in the center of both of the cakes and set the middles aside. Place one cake layer onto a cake plate and frost it with frosting. Place the second cake layer on top and fill the center of the hallowed out cake with your choice of candy. I used candy corn and M&Ms to fill the cake. Place the top middle piece of cake back on top over the candy. Frost the entire cake with the buttercream frosting and decorate.
