Fluffy and sweet vanilla cupcakes frosted with creamy classic vanilla buttercream frosting. The cupcakes are arranged into a flag shape and frosted with red, white and blue frosting. These cupcakes make the perfect dessert to bake for the Fourth of July this year. It is so easy to make these cupcakes and decorate them into a flag pattern. You can even make these cupcakes with a box of premade cake mix and a can of frosting.

The homemade vanilla cupcake batter is quick and easy to prepare, all of the ingredients are whisked together in the same bowl. After the cupcakes have baked and cooled down completely, you can prepare the frosting. You can make your own buttercream frosting, or you can also use a can of prepared frosting instead if you would rather. Divide the frosting into three bowls, color one red and one blue, leaving the other bowl with white frosting. Arrange the cupcakes into a rectangle. Frost the cupcakes in a flag pattern.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Ingredients for Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2-3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • red food coloring
  • blue food coloring

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 12 cup muffin pan with cupcake liners. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add in eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract, whisk until smooth.
  • Evenly divide cupcake batter between the lined cupcake pan. Bake for 18-20 minutes, let cool completely.
  • In a large bowl with a mixer, beat softened butter with powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Divide frosting between three bowls. Leave one bowl white, mix red food coloring into one, and blue food coloring into the last bowl.
  • Arrange cooled cupcakes into a rectangle. Evenly spread the white frosting onto the bottom three cupcakes. Frost two in the middle with red frosting. Frost the top two cupcakes white. Frost the remaining four cupcakes with the blue frosting. Pipe remaining white frosting onto blue cupcakes.
